For centuries, letterpress printers around the world have been creating impressions on paper with inked metal and wood type. In our studio we use a huge and lovely 114-year-old Chandler & Price platen letterpress and a much smaller Adana letterpress, hand-mixed inks and magnesium plates.
When a letterpress invitation or card is created, each different color to be printed is made into an individual plate. Each piece of paper is fed into the press by hand, and every revolution of the flywheel brings together the paper and the inked plate to create an impression. Each color is a separate trip through the press, with its own set-up and clean up. Every piece is checked and trimmed by hand.
The result is a unique handmade keepsake which creates a lasting impression, with the tactile beauty that can only be achieved through letterpress.
